Sustainability at Harvard

Mission of OFS

Focus

To lead Harvard in achieving all its sustainability goals, aimed at saving resources and reducing the University’s environmental impacts. We will achieve this by leveraging the collective knowledge of our partners across Harvard and by following these operating principles:

Policy Development

The Office for Sustainability (OFS) will convene University-wide stakeholders to develop policy to institutionalize Sustainability principles and University-wide goals through policy development, advocacy, and the development of accountability frameworks.

Accountability & Reporting

Facilitate and execute the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Goal Implementation framework and develop a formal reporting framework to ensure accountability to the President's Office.

Communications

OFS will manage internal and external communications about sustainability efforts and foster information sharing among stakeholders with the help of our Public Information Officers in the Schools and units, in addition to the Harvard News Office and Harvard Community Relations teams.

Best Practices

Identify best practices and new technology from internal and external sources (companies, universities, clean tech sector, etc.), and facilitate information sharing.

Education & Training

Develop training programs in support of sustainability goals.

Culture change

Promote culture change by developing University-wide outreach and education campaigns, programs, and incentives.

Staff Support

Support the Schools/units in the development and implementation of sustainability plans and programs.

Faculty Connection

Leverage faculty expertise to help us meet our GHG reduction and sustainability goals.

Innovation

Foster an innovative and entrepreneurial spirit across the University.
