Sustainability at Harvard

LEED Gold Lab at HMS

The DePace Lab in the Systems Biology Department at Harvard Medical School recently achieved LEED (“Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design”) Gold certification through the U.S. Green Building Council. This makes the DePace Lab the first LEED certified wet lab at Harvard! LEED is essentially a checklist of sustainable design criteria ranging from materials choice, to energy conservation, to indoor environmental health, and much more. Some of the lab’s green building features include the following:

  • Low-VOC emitting paints & coatings.
  • Daylight/views in 75% of the occupant spaces.
  • Optimized energy performance of equipment & appliances.
  • 75% of construction waste was diverted from landfills.
  • 20% of construction materials were manufactured regionally.
  • Lighting systems controls were installed.
