In July 2009, Arkhat Abzhanov’s group in OEB became the first FAS lab to achieve Green Labs Certification, led by the tireless effort of postdoc Celine Clabaut.  The certification is designed to recognize the environmental efforts of outstanding labs at FAS, and is coupled with the Green Labs Program’s Lab Sustainability Assessments, which help researchers set tangible, achievable goals related to making their lab and office spaces more efficient. Celine was able to claim the Green Labs Certification achievement on Abzhanov Lab’s recent National Science Foundation grant application. Eleven other labs have begun the process of getting their labs certified; their accomplishments include:

  • Getting excessive ventilation reduced
  • Installing motion sensor light controls
  • Revamping their office supply purchasing
  • Conserving chemicals and consumable lab supplies
  • Enabling energy saving modes on equipment
  • Using timers to shut down non-essential equipment overnight
  • Setting up recycling for pipette tip boxes

And much more!
