The newest students at Harvard have arrived on campus, and with them comes the newest sustainability initiative from the Resource Efficiency Program (REP). In honor of the class of 2013, we’ve kicked off the “Green ‘13” program. Green ‘13 will encompass all the efforts that the freshman class does to make their lives, and the Harvard community, more sustainable.
Green’13 kicked off with Freshmen move-in, when REPs were in the Yard all day, with “roaming REPs” helping freshmen find recycling areas and a table in front of the science center, giving out free compact florescent light bulbs (CFLs).
If you’re a freshmen and interested in Green '13, there are three main ways to become involved: 1)Come to events- the Resource Efficiency Program will be hosting Green ’13 talks, movie screenings, and study breaks throughout the year. 2) Join the Green ’13 Advisory Committee- the committee will meet once a month to discuss ways of making the freshmen experience more sustainable, and form subgroups to implement those changes. If you’re interested in joining, send us an email. 3) Apply to be a Freshmen REP- we’ll be hiring 3-4 freshmen to be student interns and help us implement the committee's suggestions. Unlike the committee, these will be paid positions, but will entail a few required hours each week and more responsibility.
In just the first couple of days, REP has already seen an immense amount of interest from the Freshmen Class. If this keeps up, it’s pretty clear that the class of 2013 will be the greenest class Harvard’s ever seen (well, at least until the class of 2014 shows up…).
