Bottled water

HLS Reps held a ‘water taste test’ in the Hark in mid-March, challenging participants to identify samples of bottled, tap, and filtered tap water. Most couldn’t tell the difference; and those that could tended to say that they preferred the taste of filtered tap over bottled water.

At the tasting event, Reps also shared a list of the top five reasons not to drink bottled water, which include the absence of quality guarantees, its high cost, the resource and greenhouse gas intensity of production and distribution, and the fact that billions of plastic water bottles are discarded to landfills every year.

The Reps have also started getting the word out about water filtration systems found in the dozens of locations around campus, including in the kitchens of every HLS dorm, and in the first floor corridors of Ames, Dane, and Shaw.
